AND NOW I SEE, 2017-2018
Leigh Blanchard continues her exploration of digital imagery and photography with her latest series And Now I See. Using an artificial intelligence system online that has been fed thousands of images, Blanchard pushes the technology’s abilities in image-to-image translation. The goal of this tool is to be able to generate an output image, using an archive of images, out of a hand-drawn input image. Instead, the artist purposely plays with the hand-drawn input image to try and produce unexpected results that the software has trouble creating. Playing with the flaws in this technology is a source of inspiration for Blanchard and a way for her to further push the boundaries of photography.
